Providence Village vote set for June 19 12:24 AM CDT on Tuesday, June 1, 2010
By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer
PROVIDENCE VILLAGE — Six people are vying for the spot that could secure one of them a small place in history as the first mayor of Denton County’s newest town. Businessman Tim Barnwell, 59; Rich Garon, 30, a salesman; Bentley Parker, 47, a teacher; Brian Roberson, 37, an operations manager; retiree Dorothy Walker, 64; and trainer Peter Wright, 41, have all filed to run for mayor of Providence Village. Voters here approved a proposition to incorporate the subdivision in May.
Early voting for mayor and Town Council will begin Monday and run weekdays through June 15. From June 7 to June 11, the polling place — Providence Community Clubhouse, 809 Oakcrest Drive — will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 14 and 15. The election is scheduled for Saturday, June 19, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
All candidates have appointed a campaign treasurer, and if any raises or spends less than $500 on their campaign, they can opt for a modified format and avoid itemizing their reports. The next deadline for finance reports is eight days before the election. A candidate forum for all candidates, including the six mayoral candidates and the 11 people running for the five at-large council seats, is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse.

Incorporation wins approval from subdivision
12:49 AM CDT on Sunday, May 9, 2010 By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer The county gets its first city in a decade, after a wide margin of voters in Providence Village agreed to incorporate their special taxing district. Supporters of the proposition to incorporate Providence Village as Type A general law municipality outnumbered opponents nearly 3-to-1, with the largest turnout ever for a local election in the area.
“It’s the most we’ve ever got,” said Clint Shipp, one of the organizers working for incorporation. “Now that we know we’ve got people voting, we can get a voice in other stuff.”
Nearly 20 percent of the 2,210 voters eligible for the election cast a ballot, and the measure passed 296-125.

Providence Seeks Incorporation

griffingirl writes "May 8 election set for Providence incorporation vote
01:54 AM CST on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 By Bj Lewis / Staff Writer
The Denton County Commissioners Court approved a motion to conduct a May 8 election on the incorporation of Providence Village into a city.
At a Feb. 9 Little Elm Town Council meeting, Providence residents requested that the council release their area from the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, with the expressed intent to become a city.
From there, organizers sought enough qualified signatures to call the election and got more than twice the amount necessary.
With the commissioners’ approval, Providence could be weeks away from becoming the county’s newest city.
Located along FM2931 and U.S. Highway 380, Providence Village began as a freshwater supply district in 2000. The development includes about 1,700 households and 5,000 residents.
Two members of the Commissioners Court were absent, but Precinct 1 County Commissioner Hugh Coleman and Precinct 4 County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell cast a vote to conduct the election along with County Judge Mary Horn.
The court also voted to appoint county elections administrator Frank Phillips as presiding officer over the election.
Providence resident Clint Shipp attended Tuesday’s meeting, and when prompted by Coleman to offer any words, Shipp thanked the court and especially Coleman for his help in the process.
“It’s been a long journey — about five years in the works — and it all came to a head very quickly,” he said.
Shipp also complimented Phillips on his handling of the election process.
Horn said the upcoming election was great for the Providence residents.
“That’s what they wanted to do,” she said. “I look forward to the election.”
