CAREER & FERTILITY

Do I want kids? Do I not? How much time do I have and will be my body do right by me to have them?

As a mid-30 something millennial, this hits home more often than you think. I've watched The stress and pressure of building a family of my friends. It makes me evaluate my journey and plans.

In 2021, I had surgery to remove fibroids that was affecting my body. In 2022, I decided to freeze my eggs in case the fibroids came back and would hinder my body in the future. Freezing my eggs was my plan to help plan for future family.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to speak on the panel for the DFW Black MBA Association about career and fertility. I was able to share my story and why I made that decision for me. My thought process is this, I can get married at any age. I cannot have a baby at any age.

We discussed fertility within black families and family planning. I was able to share my egg freezing process and detailed why I decided to start my future family planning through that route first.

What was interesting with the discussion of how much we are taught about the prevention of having a family before we are ready but not much about planning for one when we are ready. Also, a little lesson that I learned (which somewhat knew), was that there aren't many black surrogates/gestational carriers, egg donors, or sperm donors. Depending on what someone's fertility journey may be, options can be limited.

I say that last part to get some people thinking and considering being gestational carriers, egg donors, or sperm donors. We need it for our culture. We need to have options available.
